Rahul Gandhi slams drug trade in Punjab State | Latest Political News
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government of encouraging illegal drugs trade in Punjab and said his party would end the menace within a month of being voted to power in the Assembly polls due early next year. Speaking at a protest staged by the Congress in Jalandhar against the ‘rampant drug abuse’ going on in the State and the deteriorating law and order, he said that if Punjab was to have a good future, drugs should go. “We will put Punjab back on track. We need one month to solve the drugs problem after we are voted to power… To get rid of it[drug menace], the police should be given a free hand and only the Congress can do it,. There are good officers in the Punjab police, but the government isn’t giving them the freedom to work,” Mr. Gandhi said. — Special Correspondent.
“Four years ago when I highlighted the drug menace and sought corrective steps, they [the Akalis] alleged that I was defaming Punjabis. Had the government taken steps, instead of going into denial mode, the situation would not have deteriorated,” he said. “Even today, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal and other Akali leaders are unwilling to accept the truth. Movies are being banned… They are attempting to ban Udta Punjab, which highlights the drug problem,” Mr. Gandhi said.
